Contact lenses

Contact lenses can be worn as an alternative to glasses, whether you are short-sighted, long-sighted or have astigmatism.

The ACO prescribes most major types of lenses. As well as standard soft silicone-hydrogel lenses, we also fit custom Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses, miniscleral, orthokeratology and prosthetic lenses. These lenses enable improved vision for a diverse range of conditions including astigmatism, keratoconus, corneal graft, post-refractive surgery, pellucid marginal degeneration, presbyopia, myopia and aphakia.

Patients with concession cards and high prescriptions may be eligible for subsidised pricing. Please note specialist fitting is only available at Carlton and sometimes you may be booked into a teaching clinic. All patients must have a general eye examination at which time their suitability for contact lenses will be evaluated. In addition, patients may be referred in for advanced contact lens services by private eyecare practitioners.

Advanced contact lens care

ACO has a team of contact lens practitioners who are trained to manage complex and advanced ocular conditions. We offer rigid gas permeable (RGP), scleral, mini-scleral, prosthetic, orthokeratology (Ortho-K), graft and keratoconus lens designs. We work closely with corneal specialists and can assist with the management for cross-linking or corneal grafts for patients with anterior eye disease.
